Kimiko Does Cancer is a graphic memoir about the author Kimiko–a queer mixed-race human rights lawyer–who is diagnosed with breast cancer at 25 and all the personal and professional concerns that come with navigating treatment and life in recovery. Kimiko confronts a lot of gendered assumptions about reconstructive surgery, finds she has little in common with people in cancer support groups, and (not one to freely share emotions) also finds people expect a level of intimacy from her they didn’t ahead of her illness.
In this pre-recorded video, artist Keet Geniza and writer Kimiko Tobimatsu talk through their top tips on collaborating on a comic and share some of the important lessons they learned throughout the creation of Kimiko Does Cancer!
